Product Description

Three Opera Cameo programs I have with Sills (audio only). These were TV programs of highlights of one opera per show, broadcast on the Dumont Network in New York each Sunday night from 1953 to 1955.

These audios were apparently recorded directly from a TV speaker at the time. This means that none of these are in good sound, with lots of technical problems. Be warned that these are only for the dedicated Sills fan, but they at least give a feel for her voice in that time frame.

Each program is about 20 minutes or so, each in one track. Here are the descriptions and comments:

Track 1: January 30,1955 - Bizet's "Les Pêcheurs de Perles" Léïla - Beverly Sills; Nadir -Gabor Carelli; Zurga - Martial Singher Giuseppe Bamboschek, conductor. "Dans le ciel sans voile.Ah, chante encore" - Léïla & Nadir "Léïla! Léïla! Dieu puissant.Ton Coeur n'a pas compris" - Nadir & Léïla "Je frémis, je chancelle" - Léïla & Zurga "Ô lumière sainte" - Léïla, Nadir & Zurga [by default, the best of the three. The sound starts off murky with tape hiss, but soon gets better and Sills has some lovely moments].

Track 2: March 03,1955 - Verdi's "La Traviata" Violetta - Beverly Sills; Alfredo - Paul Knowles; Germont - Ettore Bastianini Giuseppe Bamboschek, conductor. "Un de felice" " Follie! follie! ... Sempre libera" "Madamigella Vale'ry? Son io" "Ah! dite alla giovine" "Ed ora si scriva a lui" [sound is a bit tinny but fairly clear. This is NOT taken from the DG DVD of "Made in America." I had this audio for at least a decade before that DVD. The sound on the DVD is much superior to this.]

Track 3: March 28, 1954 - Massenet's "Thais" Thais - Beverly Sills; Athanael - Martial Singher Giuseppe Bamboschek, conductor Act II, Sc. 1 -"Je suis seule...Dis-moi que je suis belle" -Thais Scene & duet immediately following (much abbreviated) to end of scene Act II, Sc. 2 - beginning duet Act III, Sc. 1 duet Act III, Sc. 3 - final duet [the sound here is fairly dim and there is some shattering in the loudest passages. The program is missing the spoken introduction and has a couple of dropouts in the first 30 seconds. The sound gets marginally better about halfway through. A bit of a trial.)

USA Telephone (404) 200-4776 We sell only opera recordings. The recordings are sent to you in paper sleeves with no tray card or inserts, just the raw discs with printed labels. These recordings are of nonprofessional quality that are in the public domain. The quality of these old opera recordings is not very good and they are meant for collectors and educational purposes only. Most of them are 30 or 40 years old, so they might be blurry, colors faded, and not sound very good, but they might not be available elsewhere. Please note that most of our recordings do not have tracks, they have 1 long track per disc.
