This what is said about her: Some days ago, there was a discussion about assoluta voices on this forum. Browsing the internet, I chanced upon an unknown soprano called Monica Ferracani and this amazing singer seems to fit all the requirements of an assoluta. The many sopranos who attempt the assoluta repertory fall into two categories: coloraturas who avoid the low notes and dramaticism and the big dramatic voices who smudge over the florid parts. Normally, I wouldn't complain because it is necessary to keep this repertory in circulation. But this is the first soprano I have heard in ages who does florid parts as well as a coloratura would but she also doesn't skip the low notes. Purely Judging, her voice doesn't seem to be as big as Dimitrova or Guleghina, but it is bigger than your average coloratura with enough heft to make her believable in these parts. She doesn't scream in high flying arias like Santo di Patria, she doesn't dodge the low notes or the coloratura in Macbeth, while remaining quite effective dramatically in both. She also seems to possess an old world innate musicality as in her Trovatore that's entrancing. By god, she can trill too! The most amazing discovery is her Nabucco. While not possessing volcanic power of Maria Callas, she seems to be a genuine representation of bel canto soprano singing in this role. I used to be perplexed by Geoffrey Riggs statement in his book on the assoluta voices that Abigaille is the last assoluta role that is expected to be sung because many sopranos who sing it do not sing at all but scream. I have often wondered how Giuesspina Strepponi who originated the role would have sounded. She was by no means a large dramatic voice and yet people found her quite effective in this role. I think this kind of voice and this scale of singing is what Strepponi would have managed. Her Abigaille is the first time I have heard the role *sung *with a gorgeous sense of line one would expect to hear in Puritani and her voices moves well in the heroic coloratura bits that's often simply omitted. Madame Ferracani has already added Bolena, Borgia, Norma and Devereux to her repertoire! I, for one, would find this singer more suitable to Roberto Devereux than Edita Gruberova who is currently singing it somewhere.
