CD90893 Die Walküre, Covent Garden 1989 in WAV

In October 1989 Bernard Haitink conducted his first Walküre in Covent Garcen in a production that was saved by Götz Friedrich, who brought in his 'time tunnel' from Berlin after the original producer had left the project. I loved that production and the performance was unforgettable with James Morris in his best years, Gwyneth Jones in good voice and John Tomlinson, who at that time already sang Wotan in Bayreuth, as Hunding (and later also as Hagen). But a real treat were the Walsungen, with a youthful René Kollo and with Gabriele Schnaut before she moved to the more dramatic parts. Here is the complete broadcast by the BBC (only the synopsis before each act has been cut) from October 14 1989, that I got in exchange on reel-to-reel tapes. For the most part the sound is excellent; you will only notice some drawbacks in the sound (due to the tape) during the last bars of the second acts and twice during the first part of the third act. I included the intermission features, especially because of an enlightening interview with the late Götz Friedrich, and spread the recording over four cd's (with cue sheets).
