DIE ERSTEN MENSCHEN is based on a play of the same title by infamous poet Otto Borngräber. Kain kills his brother Abel because his mother Eve seems to be physically more attracted by Abel than by himself. Kain, the worker, feels himself inferior to Abel, the visionaire and prophet of a new religion. That was the stuff for scandals - so Stephan's friend Karl Holl revised the opera after the composer's early death in WW I in order to make performances even possible. Nowadays the original version is played (when it is played), e. g. in the two commercial recordings of the opera. So just enjoy this one.
