Product Description

CD85611 Beethoven Fidelio - Bayerischen Staatsoper - Kaufmann

With one of the best Roccos that I've heard for some time, here's the Bavarian State Opera's new production of Fidelio. Pizzaro sounded nasty, as he should but often doesn't, and Leonora got into her stride by the second half of her Abscheulicher! aria (I was a bit worried there for a second).

Broadcast live by BR-Klassik, Tuesday 21 December 2010. There was quite a bit of booing from the audience - but I think it must have been directed more at the production than the singing. The only reservation I had was with what I felt was a slightly held back Heil sei dem Tag! finale.

Florestan - Jonas Kaufmann (tenor) Leonore - Anja Kampe (soprano) Rocco - Franz-Josef Selig (bass) Marzelline - Laura Tatulescu (soprano) Jaquino - Jussi Myllys (tenor) Don Fernando - Steven Humes (bass) Don Pizarro - Wolfgang Koch (baritone) First prisoner - Dean Power (tenor) Second prisoner - Tariq Nasmi (?) (bass)
