CD95713 I Puritani Wexford 1962 Freni/Saldari/Puglisi

Greetings everyone

A real and treasurable rarity has come my way today. In 1962 Mirella Freni was at the oustet of her career and she went to Wexford in Ireland to sing in "I Puritani". She sings with great artistry and nuance. Luciano Saldari does very well in the crucifying role of Arturo.

Ian Fox wrote this about the performance in his book "100 Nights at the Opera": Wexford Festival Opera – an anthology" :- " The bass Franco Ventriglia and baritone Lino Puglisi were a wonderful duo who actually met at the festival. I believe their most famous performance was a duet in "I Puritani" (1962). It received a greater encore each night than any performance I can recall. That year we were also fortunate to have Mirella Freni play a dramatic role which she had been hoping to do for a long time."

This is a medium wave broadcast performance recorded on a reel to reel recorder by a friend to whom I am very grateful and converted by him to CD. The recorded orchestra sound is somewhat blurred on occasion but the voices ring out very clearly, a very creditable result.

Best wishes Roger D Bell Lancashire England
