CD92816 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (first pre-Broadway preview)

Here's the first public performance Leonard Bernstein and Alan Jay Lerner's musical 1600 PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE. This performance took place on February 23, 1976, at the Forrest Theatre in Philadelphia. The first preview had been scheduled for Feb. 22, but that performance was canceled.

There is a good deal of material, both in the score and the book, that was cut or changed before the Broadway run. The production underwent many travails on its way to Broadway, including the replacement of the original director, Frank Corsaro, and the original choreographer, Donald McKayle. Tony Walton's sets and costumes had so many changes made to them without his input or permission that he insisted his name be removed from the playbill. According to some accounts, Bernstein and Lerner were actually locked out of rehearsals.

This is an audience recording in very decent sound. There are a couple of brief missing sections and a slightly longer missing section during "The Little White Lie," doubtless to accommodate the need to change to a second tape during the very long first act.

There's a pre-curtain speech from Bernstein in which he welcomes the audience and also warns them that the show might need to come to a stop at some point. And indeed it does come to a stop, which you'll also hear.

I will add that this first performance is pretty fascinating and there is much extraordinary material here. There is also a recording on OperaShare (not posted by me) from the Broadway run, which you can find by doing a search (if you don't already have it).
