Debussy Diane au bois BBC 1968

Here is a fascinating Debussy rarity, never made available before. This is the first performance anywhere of all that survivers of his early ‘heroic comedy’ DIANE AU BOIS, preceded by an illustrated introduction to the work by the great Debussy authority Edward Lockspeiser.

Debussy completed the work in his early 20s but there are already some notable hints of things to come in his mature works. He never completed the orchestration, so the work is played here from the surviving manuscript score on two pianos. As Lockspeiser explains, Diane was particularly significant as a precursor of the Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune.

Broadcast on November 9th, 1968, the performers are as follows: Elizabeth Simon (soprano) Ian Partridge (tenor) Viola Tunnard and Paul Hamburger (two pianos)

The zip file contains two mp3 files, both at about 200kbps: 1. Lockespeiser’s illustrated introduction (13:19) 2. Performance (28:00)
