Product Description

CD83385 Music of Peter Mennin

With one exception, these are all, to the best of my knowledge, broadcast performances. The Munch performance of the 5th Symphony was not broadcast. The recording was made by the Boston Symphony for the composer. It was performed at a time when the orchestra’s rehearsals were being broadcast. I have included the broadcast of the rehearsal prior to the performance. My copy of the performance came from Walter Simmons who has just finished a new book which discusses the three main “Juilliard” composers: Schuman, Mennin and Persichetti. Walter got his copy of the Munch performance from Mennin’s widow. The Rene Fleming performance was one of her first professional gigs. As for the Szell performance of the 7th… to my ears a savage and powerful performance of one of the masterpieces of music. I wish I had a copy of his Cleveland performance of this work. These recordings are of nonprofessional quality that are in the public domain. The quality of these old opera recordings is not very good and they are meant for collectors and educational purposes only.
