I thought you might enjoy this.

If Irene Dalis and Robert Weede were singing today, they'd be at the top of the heap. In this performance, they're also-rans.

In no way does Leonie Rysanek convince me she is an Ethiopian princess. Only Leontyne Price has been able to do that. She does, however, convince me she is a highly intelligent German soprano who shifts into high gear and takes her foot off the brake. Now, no one has ever stolen a scene from Jon Vickers. When he sees what's happening, he jumps right in and danged if he doesn't pass her. It makes for an AIDA like no other, except maybe Callas' Mexico City performance, but that was essentially a one-woman show.

Listen for yourselves, but be warned that this was recorded from the audience by someone hiding a tape-recorder in a bag of popcorn. (Remember when we used to have to do that?) There's a lot of noise and the voices are a bit distant, but the excitement still comes through. Also, watch out for one of the all-time big horn bobbles. Yikes!
