Product Description

CD7542 Massenet Sapho 2001 Wexford

Here's a recording of a 2001 live performance at the Wexford Opera Festival of Massenet's little heard opera Sapho. It was on reading the latest edition of Gramophone magazine and a letter to the editor explaining that Brandon Jovanovich was discovered by the Wexford Opera Festival first, as was Juán Diego Floréz that I scuttled over to the CD shelves and retrieved this Massenet work - my only CD with Jovanovich.

I can't remember quite how the recording was done, probably on video tape from a BBC radio 3 satellite broadcast.

The cast was as follows:

Fanny Legrand..... ......... ......... ..Giuseppina Piunti (Italian soprano)

Jean Gaussin..... ......... ......... ...Brandon Jovanovich (US tenor)

Divonne..... ......... ......... .......Agata Bienkowska (Polish mezzo-soprano)

Césaire...... ......... ......... ......... ..Massimiliano Gagliardo (Italian baritone)

Irène........ ......... ......... ......... ......... ....Ermonela Jaho (Albanian soprano)

Caoudal..... ......... ......... ......... ......... .Luca Salsi (Italian baritone)

La Bourderie... ......... ......... ......... ....Ángel Pazos (Spanish (?) tenor)

Wexford Festival Opera Chorus, National Philharmonic Orchestra of Belarus are conducted by Jean-Luc Tingaud.
