BIZET - LE DOCTEUR MIRACLE

It was Bizet's first opera - though in truth an opra-comique. Composed for a competition sponsored by Offenbach (and judged by Auber, Gounod, Halvy, Scribe and Thomas), it tied for first prize and was staged in 1857. It would be unrealistic to call it a masterwork; it is a buoyant demonstration of the composer's control of his craft and understanding of the genre. Had Bizet not gone on to write Carmen, it would no doubt have suffered the ignominious fate of its co-winner, Lecoq's setting of the same text, and vanished after its first season of eleven performances.

Instead, it has been revived and recorded at least twice: in 1973 and here, without dialogue, in 1975 under Bruno Amaducci. The Laurette is Christiane Eda-Pierre, the Doctor (also Pasquin and Captain Silvio) is Rmy Corazza, with Robert Massard as the Mayor and Lyliane Guitton as Vronique (Laurette's parents). At about 45 minutes, it should be taken for the light confection that it is, not as a foretoken of the greatness to come.
