Product Description

CD4787 Bertin Esmeralda 2002 Besnaon

French Grand Opera of 1836. Inhouse recording from the general rehearsal 18th February 2002 Besanon Those of you that have read Anselm Gerhard's book The Urbanisation of Opera (dreadful title: it should be The Cosmopolitanisation of Opera, but that sounds worse) will have read a whole chapter about this work. Is it an iconic work in the history of Grand Opera or a milestone in the emergence of women composers? Difficult to tell when virtually nothing from the opera is known to any but the few who have attended one of the few performances. Besanon put on a single performance in 2002 to mark the birthday of Victor Hugo. About 80% of the music was performed in the published piano reduction by 'Lizst' (sic). That the performance happened at all is due to the championship of Franoise Tillard, the pianist. This in-house recording comes from the rehearsal the day before (an event marked by an accident to the soprano that nearly torpedoed the whole venture). It is far from perfect, but in furthering the cause it is better to be able to hear it. Cover and cast list etc are in the CD1 folder.

Important Information!!!
USA Telephone (404) 200-4776 We sell only opera recordings. The recordings are sent to you in paper sleeves with no tray card or inserts, just the raw discs with printed labels. These recordings are of nonprofessional quality that are in the public domain. The quality of these old opera recordings is not very good and they are meant for collectors and educational purposes only. Most of them are 30 or 40 years old, so they might be blurry, colors faded, and not sound very good, but they might not be available elsewhere. Please note that most of our recordings do not have tracks, they have 1 long track per disc.
