From childhood it was her one ambition to become a famous singer, and after some preliminary training, sailed for England, armed with courage and some letter of introduction; the letters had little effect, but the courage took her to Paris where Marchesi, greatest of teacher, accepted her, and gave her an impeccable technique to add to her natural beauty of vocal tone. After a successful debut at the Monnaie, Brussels, she was contracted to sing at Covent Garden in the following year. Her fist London season was give cool praise, but she did win powerful friends when encouraged her to try again, and for the next 20 years she was the undisputed Queen of Opera in London, In 1908 Convent Garden was dazzled by Tetrazzini, but Melba was soon back in full command, and remained so until the First World War closed the Opera House. She returned after the War, revealing some fading of her powers, but at her farewell in 1926, the years were shed, and she sang as she had in her prime. Now her name is an operatic legend. In this recording from 1904-7 Melba's true qualities are captured in her greatest roles.
