The La Scala Orchestran and Chorus Conductor: Herbert von Karajan ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is an extremely rare and historic performance. The Scala production, was one of the supreme nights of La Callas carrer, at a time when La Callas could sustain an E-flat in alt for ten seconds of more. Karajan also expands the second-act finale by replacing a lengthy cut not heard in La Calla's performances of her work without Karajan. Her voice is bright and lows easily, its top radiant. While all the extraordinary subleties of rhythm are present which we have come to expect from her singing, her singing is of such beauty, and passagework is of such dazzling freedom. Di Stefano, too, is in fine vocal phase, and his performance of the first-act duet, in which La Callas tracing of "Verrano a te" remains as plaintive as ever, sets off a proldongd volley of

applause from the audience. The tempo for the Mad Scene is of a breadth which might well choke another, but La Callas thrived within such spaciousness. She binds the scene tightly together with her unique

legato, and her voice is more shaded than elsewhere . Unfortunately, some five dozen bars of the Mad Scene were lost in transmmission, as was a bit in

the first act. The Cadenza, however, is present and immaculately sung.
