III. the Nightingale

The celebrated director Robert Lepage has combined several short pieces by Stravinsky to create a fascinating production: the orchestra pit becomes a pond, the Hague Philharmonic Orchestra takes its place on the stage! As a composer the young Stravinsky was strongly influenced by Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov. In these early works this influence is clearly reflected in their strong affinity with folk music and fairytales. In the Nightingale and Other Fables animal fables, staged with the use of puppets and shadow theatre, portray a fantasy world that can effortlessly be applied to humankind. In the Fox the fox ultimately falls victim to its own vanity and lust for power. The Nightingale is based on a fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen. As a fable, this short opera emphasises the message that there is no substitute for true art and that its effect should not be underestimated – a moral that has lost none of its significance to this day.
