Although Shirley Verrett sang over 100 performances at the Met,she states in her autobiography that she never felt comfortable at the Met-- perhaps racism played a part. Most of her career was in Europe where she was a great favorite at La Scala. She started her career as a mezzo- soprano but in the late 1970s she began to take on soprano roles such as TOSCA . This is the audio from a film she made in 1966.
