CD9673 von Rezniek Donna Diana (Uhl, Sadnic c Windfuhr)

While you might think this is an unfamiliar opera, actually you know it quite well!

At least you are familiar with the overture; if you doubt me, d/l and play Disc 1 (of 2), track 01 - "Ouverture".

If you are wondering whether you should d/l this particular version, I should say that I believe this to be the only recording of this opera available. It has never been released on video, nor previously recorded on audio to the best of my knowledge.

So, if you're a collector who doesn't already have it, you MUST d/l it; for the rank & file, I feel there is much to appreciate here.

It was written in 1895 and when von Reznicek sold it, he was told that it needed an overture and, "to be sure and make it quick and snappy!"

As the story goes, he wrote it that very night & the rest (as they say) was history.

Why it has remained in obscurity is a mystery to me; the composer tried to resurrect it in the '30s by updating its time-frame without success. I'm guessing the story line can't compete with "Romeo & Juliet", which seems to get updated every few years!

The individual performances range from quite good to not-so-quite good; (not a lot to pick from when only one version is available!)

The orchestral performance is more than adequate, and the audio quality is superior. (I encoded it at VBR 320 & most of the content was at 224.)

For those who might wonder why the overture is so familiar, here are a couple of hints:

It was the theme song of the Deutsche version of the television show, "Name That Tune" & also (back in the late '40s & early '50s) the theme song for the U.S. radio show, "Sgt. Preston of the Yukon".

It is also a perennial favorite of operatic overture compilations.

Hope you like it!
