Sieben Monate, von August 1858 bis März 1859, lebte und arbeitete Richard Wagner in Venedig. Hier entstand ein großer Teil des zweiten Aktes von "Tristan und Isolde". Die Chronik dieses Arbeitsaufenthalts erzählt von einer großen, inspirierenden Liebe, von einer Flucht und einer Selbstfindung; die Stadt und ihre ganz besonderen Umstände spielen eine wichtige Rolle, ihnen wird der zweite Akt abgetrotzt. Vor allen Dingen ist das aber ein Stück Musikgeschichte, die sich – wie immer bei Richard Wagner – in einem Ausnahmezustand befindet.
