*************************************

Johann Adolf Hasse wrote the first "Solimano" - a libretto by then Dresden court poet Gianambroglio Migliavacca, a student and assistant with Metastasio before this recommended him for the Dresden position (although not fully convinced of his capabilities).

The Hasse SOLIMANO was a real highlight in the Dresden music life of the epoch, one of the most expensive stage performances ever - with hundreds of people involved and real animals put on the stage also (including elephants, horses, dromedars, camels) - and one of the most successful on top of that. Even for the last performances the court ladies ordered members of the court's Swiss guard to the opera house to reserve seats for them - much to the digrace of the other enthusiasts.

I put together the main things on the libretto and the Dresden performance together in a word file, which contains much of the information translated into English. I compiled a more systematic description on the German wikipedia site
