CD89803 Andrea Chenier - Dublin 1957 Mancini/Galie/Mastrangelo
With amazing generosity a friend has given me a recording which is 54 years old. In 1957 Caterina Mancini came to Dublin to sing in their 3rd Italian Opera Festival, and the operas for her that year were "Aida" opposite Umberto Borso and "Andrea Chenier" with Antonio Galie. Fortunately there is a recording of the Giordano opera and the sound is vivid and clear. The Gaiety Theatre was apparently not full for this presentation, the name of Giordano not being as familiar then as it is now. I would imagine there would be no empty seats these days if artists of this calibre were cast in this opera. Sadly with the demise of Opera Ireland that is not an imminent prospect.
