Product Description

CD89247 Williamson, Symphonic Variations

When Chandos announced their series of the orchestral works of Malcolm Williamson I expected that one of my off-air 'mistakes' of the 1970s would soon be put right. How wrong! The recording series seems to have been abandoned and so I offer here my tape transfers of Williamson's Symphonic Variations. It was commissioned for performance at the Edinburgh Festival in 1965 by the BBC Concert Orchestra and Vilem Tausky. The programme notes (by the composer) are included in the download as a .jpg. I have 2 recordings: the complete work (less the opening moments, my 'mistake') from a BBC studio concert circa 1978 by the BBC Northern Symphony Orchestra with Vernon Handley (tracks 1-5) and two extracted movements (2 and 3) from a 1980s or 1990s broadcast by the BBC Concert Orchestra with Frank Shipway (tracks 6,7). The extraction of these two movements was sanctioned by the composer who made a chamber orchestra reduction of them, but this may be the full orchestration. If anyone has a complete recording of this or another performance then please upload it.

Technical: cassette transfer into WAV and then conversion to .mp3 (320 kbps). There is occasional brief static in the early recording. Enjoy aqua

Important Information!!!
USA Telephone (404) 200-4776 We sell only opera recordings. The recordings are sent to you in paper sleeves with no tray card or inserts, just the raw discs with printed labels. These recordings are of nonprofessional quality that are in the public domain. The quality of these old opera recordings is not very good and they are meant for collectors and educational purposes only. Most of them are 30 or 40 years old, so they might be blurry, colors faded, and not sound very good, but they might not be available elsewhere. Please note that most of our recordings do not have tracks, they have 1 long track per disc.
