Riccardo Brengola, winner of the 1938 Eugène Ysaÿe competition and the 1936 Geneva International Competition.

This is Esercizi di memoria's presentation (Saturday/Sunday 1/2 May 2010) of Riccardo Brengola, clearly a leading violinist in his day. This crop of recordings spans the late 50's — late 60's.

Esercizi's Web site gives the following description — translated rather piecemeal by me. I left out the bits I failed to understand:

Internationally renowned Riccardo Brengola (1917 – 2004) who, a child prodigy, earned his diploma at the tender age of 11. Won prestigious first prize at the 1936 Geneva International Competition and 1938 International Eugène Ysaye Competition (Queen Elizabeth Competition), Brussels, the previous year's winners being David Oistrakh and Ricardo Odnoposoff.

Pursued an international career, playing in the principal concert halls in Europa, Asia, US and South America. Founded the noted Brengola-Bordoni duo with the pianist Giuliana Bordoni, with whom he was married and, from 1939, the Quintetto Chigiano, one of the leading Italian chamber ensembles on the world stage, which later grew into the Sestetto Chigiano.

Was appointed lecturer at the Pesaro Conservatory at the express request of Riccardo Zandonai; he also taught at the conservatories of Bologna, Naples & Rome. Other institutions of merit where he worked include Rome's Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and Sienna's Accademia Musicale Chigiana.

Riccardo Brengola was violinist with Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma della RAI and Orchestra Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. He had a vast repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary. He is remembered as a bold advocate of the work of contemporary composers, popular and classical alike, as the following selection should demonstrate.

So much for Esercizi's intro. In addition to some of the usual warhorses, Brengola play's Britten's violin concerto (under Celbidache), Busoni's violin concerto, Mendelssohn's D minor, Rodolphe Kreutzer's 10th violin concerto and Strauss's youthful violin sonata.
