CD88847 A Wedding Bouquet - narrated version

Here is a real rarity which I'm delighted to be able to share: a performance of Lord Berners' ballet 'A Wedding Bouquet' in the version for narrator and orchestra.

The piece was originally written, for Sadler's Wells Ballet with libretto by Gertrude Stein and choreography by Frederick Ashton, for chorus and orchestra, but during the years of the second World War it proved impossible to obtain the services of a chorus, so the conductor Constant Lambert hit on the idea of reciting the words from the side of the stage. This proved such a success that the danced version is now always given in this version, while concert performances use the original choral version.

This is a BBC Radio 3 recording from 1975, made at the instigation of an old friend of mine, the Radio 3 announcer Cormac Rigby, who was a great balletomane and somehow succeeded in persuading Radio 3 to record a whole series of programmes of ballet music which was in the repertory of the Royal Ballet but had never received a commercial recording. It is Cormac who makes the closing announcement at the end of the recording.

The music is played by the BBC Concert Orchestra under Ashley Lawrence, and the narrator is Robert Grange. The recording derives from a mono cassette recording I made at the time, and is very acceptable for the period.

David.
