CD88563 Margaret Price

Margaret Price who sadly died some weeks ago today would have celebrated her seventieth birthday! She is one of the singers I admired most. In my first happy years as a teen opera visitor at Cologne she and Lucia Popp were the much adored stars in Jean Pierre Ponelle´s famous cycle of all the major Mozart operas. Cosi fan tutte over the years had the stellar Fiordiligi casting of Margaret Price, Kiri te Kanawa and Julia Varady (who was a wonderful Donna Elvira to Price´s Donna Anna, too). Of the three Margaret Price by far was the biggest. But as soon she moved on the stage and began to sing you forgot all about a massive corpus and only could marvel about the facility, the grace and depth of her personality. It didn´t matter how beautiful the other two ladies might have been how well she sang. They always lost the comparison with Margaret Price. And the voice has been a unique one: with this nearly vibrato less and instrumental but at the same time infinitely womanly timbre. And how big this voice could be! Listening to these recordings I fall in love again with this unique artist.

The compilation is sampled over the last weeks from different German and Austrian broadcasts. The files are mp3 320 kb
