CD87197 Additional Info on Sills Concerts

Thanks once again to "bboyce150" for his recent uploads of three Beverly Sills concerts. Below is some further information and some additional tracks:

1.The complete January 11, 1969 San Antonio concert is not available elsewhere on OperaShare (a few selections from it are there but in poorer sound) and it's a great pairing of two NYCO stars. The recent upload has all of Sills' solos and duets with Norman Treigle from that concert. However, Treigle also sang 4 solos on that concert. For completists, here are those four:

Handel: Giulio Cesare - 1. Presti omai l'Egizia terra 2. Va, tacito e nascosto 3. Dall'ondoso perigilio

Boito: Mefistofele - 4. Ecco il monde

MP3 - 256 kbps

2.The May 1967 Cologne radio concert upload is also is not on OperaShare (only some selections in poor sound) and it is Sills at her freshest. The complete recording session included two additional arias not uploaded by "bboyce150." Here are they are:

1. Meyerbeer: Dinorah - "Ombre legere" 2. Verdi: Ernani: "Ernani, Ernani involami...Tutto sprezzo"

MP3 - 256 kbps

Here is some background about the recording of these arias: Sills had engagements in Salzburg and Vienna in April 1967. While there, she was asked to tape eight arias in Cologne for a later German Radio concert broadcast (according to a contemporary New York Herald Tribune article by William Bender). The concert was not live but recorded in the studio (there is no audience). There has been some confusion about the date of these recordings because five of the eight arias were issued on Arkadia GI 804.1, incorrectly listing the date as May 1968. However, a privately issued LP from the pre-CD era (MG 101 - Beverly Sills Operatic Recital) lists the date as May 1967, consistent with her 1967 trip. It is possible that German Radio didn't broadcast the concert until May 1968, or that date may simply be an error on the Arkadia CD.

3. The January 22, 1972 Philadelphia concert has been on OperaShare previously but all links are currently dead. The recent upload has all of Sills' solos and the one duet that she sang with McCracken. However, McCracken also sang three solos on that concert. For completists, here is the entire vocal part of that Philadelphia Orchestra 115th anniversary concert, including radio announcer commentary:

Beverly Sills

1. Bellini: I Capuleti e I Motecchi - "Oh, quante volte" 2. Verdi: La Forza del Destino - "O tu che in seno" -JM 3. Donizetti: Linda di Chamounix - "O luce di quest'anima" 4. Rossini: Barbiere di Siviglia - "Una voce poco fa" 5. Puccini: Turandot - "Nessum dorma" - JM 6. Leoncavallo: I Pagliacci - "Vesti la giubba" - JM 7. Puccini: La Boheme - "O soave fanciulla" - duet
