Product Description

CD84182 Stephen Kovacevich 70th birthday concert, Wigmore Hall

Here's BBC Radio 3's transmission yesterday (Tuesday 25 October 2010) of the recital given by Stephen Kovacevich together with Martha Argerich, the Belcea Quartet, Khatia Buniatishvili, Colin Currie and Sam Walton (the latter two on percussion).

However, celebrations were kick-started on Monday 24 October, when Radio 3 pulled out of its hat a performance by Stephen Bishop as he was then given in 1969 at Broadcasting House.

Here he played

01 Beethoven - Piano Sonata in D minor, op 31 no 2 ‘Tempest’

02 Schubert - 3 Pieces D946, nos 1 & 3

accounting for the first two items in the zipped audio file.

Next comes the Wigmore Hall recital. I've retained the spoken introductions in between because Stephen Kovacevich has some interesting things to say about his approach to playing. There are therefore seven items in this part of the programme.

03 Spoken intro

04 Brahms - Piano Quintet in F minor, op 34 (Stephen Kovacevich, Belcea Quartet)

05 Spoken intro

06 Liszt - Piano Sonata in B minor (Khatia Buniatishvili)

07 Spoken intro

08 Bartók - Sonata for two pianos and percussion (Stephen Kovacevich, Martha Argerich, Colin Currie, Sam Walton)

09 Happy Birthday!

Radio 3 rounded off the evening by resuscitating 4 pieces played by somebody entirely different - Nigel Kennedy aged 18 (first three pieces) and 35 (the final piece). They account for items 10-13

10 Schumann - FAE Sonata (Finale) Nigel Kennedy (violin) Yitkin Seow (piano)

11 Ysaÿe - Sonata no 3 in D minor (dedicated to George Enescu) (Ballade) Nigel Kennedy (violin)

12 Kreisler - Liebesleid and Liebesfreud Nigel Kennedy (violin) Yitkin Seow (piano)

(All recorded in 1975 at Broadcasting House)

13 From June 1992, Alte Schloss, Kiel, Germany Bach - Violin Partita no 3 in E major, BWV 1006. I. Preludio

I should perhaps have given Nigel Kennedy a separate zip file, but I didn't.
