André Charles Prosper Messager (1853-1929) French musician who was for some time a pupil of Saint-Saëns and Gabriel Fauré (with whom he collaborated on the Messe des pêcheurs de Villerville) . In 1874 Messager was appointed organist at Saint- Sulpice. In 1876, he won the gold medal of the Société des Compositeurs with a symphony. Messager composed 45 works for the stage, of which eight were ballets.

The story is simple, but effective: the tempestuous relationship between an elderly lawyer, his pretty, but in no way gratified young wife Jacqueline, a stormy army captain and finally - Fortunio, a young man from the provinces, who right from the start is madly in love with Jacqueline, but only succeeds after a great deal of turmoil.
