El 26 de febrero de 1959 la BBC retransmite la tercera función de Lucia di Lammermoor, una vez que Joan Sutherland ha triunfado en las dos primeras. Sería Tullio Serafín, que seis años atrás había guiado los primeros pasos de Callas como Lucia, quien preparara ahora a Sutherland para debutar en el papel de la desdichada heroína donizettiana, y la actuación de la australiana es de quitar el aliento: voz con cuerpo, igualdad de color en la extensísima tesitura, un registro sobreagudo de contundencia y seguridad absolutas, coloratura impecable expuesta a velocidades de vértigo, como expresando un grave trastorno mental. La magistral batuta de Serafín, y Zeffirelli en la escena, redondearon una velada histórica en los anales del Covent Garden.
