Bachs h-Moll-Messe ist die ultimative Messvertonung ihrer Epoche. Die Messe gilt als Meilenstein der Musikgeschichte, das Manuskript wurde vor Kurzem sogar als Weltkulturerbe eingestuft. In ihr verdichtet sich Bachs Kompositionskunst, denn für den Komponisten bedeutete diese Messe eine Art Lebenswerk. Über Jahrzehnte begleitete sie Bach, erst gegen Ende seines Lebens vollendete er seine "Missa tota".
