Livret du compositeur inspiré de la pièce Der Kreidekreis d’Alfred Henschke dit Klabund (1925),
elle-même tirée du drame chinois de Li Qianfu (XIIIe siècle).
Création : Opera de Zurich. 14 octobre 1933.
